About
I was a GP for ten years before I trained as a psychotherapist.
In general practice you come to know the patients whose difficulties don't resolve - the pain that moves, the symptoms that keep returning with a normal result, the depression that has outlasted two rounds of CBT and three medications. You refer, and sometimes it helps, and often it doesn't.
I work with those patients now. I practise the Conversational Model, developed at the University of Sydney for complex trauma and disturbance of self. I am a coordinator for the Masters programme in trauma-informed therapy there, and supervise trainee therapists in their clinical work.
I see adults and adolescents, in person in Byron Bay and by video anywhere in Australia or internationally.

Two ways of working
Brief therapy - 8 to 16 sessions
Psychodynamic interpersonal therapy is a defined, time-limited treatment with randomised trial evidence in depression, self-harm, and physical symptoms that have no physical explanation. It is often what is offered when CBT has been tried without lasting benefit. Medicare rebates are available with a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP.
Longer-term psychotherapy
For trauma that has shaped how a person experiences themselves and other people. The Conversational Model works on the assumption that a coherent sense of self is made between people, and can be rebuilt the same way. Weekly and open-ended, with close attention to the texture of the conversation rather than advice or homework.
Both are conversations. There are no worksheets. If you have tried therapy before and found it too brisk or too shallow, this is likely to be different.
